Abstract

The sustainable use of listed buildings in a partially modified function requires proof of structural security. The existing constructions can often not be proven according to the usual, currently applicable design methods. This is often contrasted with the observation of a damageless use so far. Parallel to load tests, the approach of the vault bearing effect of slabs with horizontal deformation restriction appears promising as a monument-compatible and economical solution for minimizing retrofitting measures. Based on material and geometrical nonlinear calculations, the principal effects of slender, one-direction spanned slabs were investigated. Based on the theory of Compressive Membrane Action, a simplified calculation model for qualitative parameter studies was developed. The verification method with the model within the scope of the valid standards shows partially significant load reserves. The application of the model requires an in-depth material exploration in the existing structure.
