Giant-cell tumor in soft parts in a patient with osseous Paget's disease: Diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration

Abstract: In this report, the cytological features and differential diagnosis of a case of giant‐cell tumor (GCT) in soft tissues in a patient with osseous Paget's disease (PD) are described, with histological confirmation. Characteristic cytological findings include a diffuse cellular population of neoplastic cells composed of two types: one group of polygonal or round mononuclear small cells, exhibiting a thin‐rim, dense cytoplasm and single hyperchromatic nuclei; and the second group of multinucleated, osteoclast‐typ… Show more

“…In our opinion, our case is similar to the 77 previously reported cases 8–14 of primary GCT of soft tissue. In all cases, radiography and/or computed tomography scan showed no connection with the nearby bone, and surgery confirmed the extraosseous location.…”

“…Although our patient did not present this feature, metaplastic bone trabeculae are a frequent event in GCT of soft tissue, and their pathogenesis has been discussed by Teot et al 9 Thirty-four of the 78 (43.5%) reported GCT of soft tissue showed scattered bony structures or even an incomplete bony shell of metaplastic bone trabeculae, mainly located at the margin of the tumor. [8][9][10][12][13][14] Vascular invasion, a recently described feature in 18 of 64 (28%) cases, [12][13][14] was not observed in our case.…”
