Giant Faraday rotation in Cd1–xMnx Te (0 < x < 0.82) crystals

Abstract: We investigated the magneto-optical properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors Cd 1-x Mn x Te crystals grown using a vertical Bridgman method. This material crystallizes in the zinc-blende structure for values of x < 0.82. The band-gap energy was depended on Mn mole fraction x linearly and increased with decreasing temperature. The increase of the energy gap with increasing x may be due to a decrease in the lattice constant. Faraday rotation as a function of photon energy with various Mn compositions for Cd… Show more

“…Above this value, PL line branch appears at 2 eV, independent of x, which is related to transitions between the excited and ground states of Mn ions [5,[19][20][21][22][23]. OA measurements also show E g (x) tending to saturate for x > 0.4, but at somewhat higher level of 2.15-2.25 eV, depending on lattice temperature [12]. At any value of x, the values of E g (x) deduced from OA and PL turn out to be different, and the origin of this difference is not clear.…”

“…Cd 1-x Mn x Te solid solutions have been primarily synthesised for experimental verification of the concept of exchange interaction of Mn magnetic moments with electron and hole spins [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. The discovery of giant Faraday rotation in these crystals invoked magnetooptical device engineering [8][9][10][11][12]. It triggered research in low-dimensional structures with magnetic ions [13][14][15] for nanophotonics and spintronics [16].…”

“…A literature search revealed several potential materials such as Cadmium Manganese Telluride (CdMnTe) 8 and Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) 9 and existing Faraday Rotator materials such as TGG and Yittrium Iron Garnet were also tested. The different Faraday Rotator materials were placed inside a magnet producing a 0.568T magnetic field with two polarisers either side of the magnet.…”

“…These crystals are not convenient due to their ferroelectric properties and, moreover, their growth is more complicated technologically, when compare with the procedures for obtaining the glasses. On the other hand, magnetically ordered solids which are nontransparent in the visible and ultraviolet spectral ranges also belong to the bulk magnetooptic materials [33][34][35][36]. In the present study we report the results of studies for the electrooptic and magnetooptic properties of LiKB 4 O 7 , Li 2 B 6 O 10 , and LiCsB 6 O 10 glasses.…”
