Giant Fibroepithelial Polyp of the Glans Penis

Abstract: Fibroepithelial polyps are a benign neoplasm of mesodermal origin that usually occur in the urinary tract. However, a giant fibroepithelial polyp of the glans penis is very rare and is strongly linked with long-term condom catheter use. In this article, we report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with a giant fibroepithelial polyp originating from the glans penis. Physical examination showed a 6x3 cm sized mass lesion overlying the ventral surface of the glans near the urethral meatus without urethral … Show more

“…3 Recurrence has been reported at varying intervals and is amendable to repeat excision. In 2012, Kampantais and colleagues summarized the literature and detailed 20 patients with penile FEPs; nine of these patients had a history of chronic condom catheter use, 9 a finding echoed by Mason and colleagues in an earlier publication.…”

“…2 It is speculated that chronic venous congestion occurs secondary to extrinsic compression caused by the condom catheter, and leads to stromal proliferation. 1 Other theories implicate tumour formation secondary to chronic inflammation of the glans penis, 3 or exaggerated regeneration during postoperative healing. 2 We report a case of a 62-year-old man with a large fibroepithelial polyp of the glans penis, which was not associated with condom catheter use or prior surgery.…”

“…A literature search for case studies of ONs identified a total of 127 cases (3,(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)22) . ONs were observed in female patients in 64.3% of cases, with a male to female ratio of 1.00:1.80.…”

“…We performed a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain as an effective and low-cost alternative for the identification of mast cells (16,22) . Mast cells were identified in most of the cases, frequently localized to the perivascular region and the periphery of the lesions, as reported in other studies (9,23) , thereby suggesting their migration from blood vessels and/or peripheral tissues.…”

“…Veelal bevindt een FEP zich waar huid-huidcontact plaatsvindt, zoals in de liezen en oksels. Een FEP ontstaat zelden in de tractus urogenitalis [3], maar als ze zich hier voordoen, worden ze doorgaans in een ureter aangetroffen en sporadisch op de glans penis [4]. Tot op heden zijn er -voor zover ons bekend -22 casus over peniele FEP's [2,5,6].…”
