Giant leiomyosarcoma of the rectum with lymph node metastasis: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: HighlightsThe most definitive feature of LMS is immunohistochemical positivity for desmin and SMA, and negativity for DOG 1, CD34, S-100 protein, and c-kit.It is crucial to diagnose leioyosarcoma precisely based on immunohistochemistry, and thereby distinguish it from GIST.Lymphadenectomy appears to be important for high-risk LMSs to perform R0 resection.

“…Most reports about this neoplasm focus on its occurrence in humans (Daudia et al, 2001;Piovanello et al, 2007;Patrono et al, 2014). Giant leiomyosarcoma has been reported in humans in different tissues, such as kidney (Öziş, et al, 2014), uterus (Senol et al, 2016), subcutaneous tissues (Kumar et al, 2016), and rectum (Anzai, 2017). However, no reports of giant leiomyosarcoma in canine species have been reported.…”

“…Anzai et al and Yahagi et al reviewed reports of 14 cases of leiomyosarcoma of the rectum and 27 cases of leiomyosarcoma of the colon published after 1998, when the diagnosis by immunostaining method was established [10,11]. Although some cases of colorectal leiomyosarcoma have since been reported, only 1 case exhibited lymph node metastasis [6,10]. The clinicopathological characteristics of this previous case and our own are summarized in Table 1 [6,10].…”

“…Although some cases of colorectal leiomyosarcoma have since been reported, only 1 case exhibited lymph node metastasis [6,10]. The clinicopathological characteristics of this previous case and our own are summarized in Table 1 [6,10]. Among these 2 cases, both patients were females in the age range of 72 to 76 years, and the primary organs were the rectosigmoid and left side of the transverse colon.…”
