Giant Metastatic Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma in the Left Ventricle: Appearance in Echocardiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Histopathology

Abstract: Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare soft‐tissue neoplasm that accounts for <1% of all soft‐tissue sarcomas. Most cases arise in the extremities and head and neck region of young adults. The common sites of metastasis are lung, brain, and bone. Cardiac metastasis is extremely rare, in particular. Here we present the diagnostic evaluation and successful surgical resection of such a cardiac tumor in a patient aged 50 years with a histology‐confirmed diagnosis of metastatic alveolar soft part sarcoma. © 2011 W… Show more

“…Moreover, as in our patient, thoracic symptoms are often attributed to pulmonary metastases which are the most frequent metastasis site in sarcomas. To our best knowledge, there are 20 cases of cardiac metastases of soft tissue sarcoma reported in the literature [3,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11], all of them were found in adult patients. Our case is the first case reported of cardiac metastases of a soft tissue sarcoma in a child.…”

“…Akiyama et al reported a case of ASPS of the right thigh which was surgically removed and later metastasized to lungs, brain, intestines, and heart [18]. Strecker et al reported a case of ASPS of right thigh with brain and later cardiac metastases, which could be excised partially [19]. Campbell et al described a case of surgically resected ASPS of the right forearm which later spread to lungs, heart, and brain.…”

“…There have been several reports of cardiac metastases in the the literature [ 3 , 4 ]. Intracardiac metastases are reported from several different primary cancers, including melanoma, bladder[ 4 ], sarcoma[ 5 ], lung, lymphoma, breast carcinoma[ 6 ] and cervix [ 7 ]. Cardiac metastases from primary anaplastic thyroid carcinoma are rare - an autopsy series has reported the rate as 0 to 2% [ 2 ].…”
