Gill Ultrastructure of the Spiny Top Shell, Batillus cornutus (Gastropoda: Turbinidae)

Abstract: Gill morphology and ultrastructure of the spiny top shell, Batillus cornutus were described using light and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The spiny top shell, Batillus cornutus has bipectinate gill. The epithelial layer of gill filament was simple and composed of columnar epithelium, ciliated cell, mitochondria-rich cell and secretory cell. Microvilli were well-developed on the free surface of columnar epithelial cell. The epithelial cells are connected to the neighboring cells with intercelluar junctions… Show more

“…Most gastropods do not have sexual dimorphism, but there are species in which males and females can be distinguished by gonadal color at maturity. For example, the gonads of Batillus cornutus (Turbinidae) [17], Haliotis discus hannai (Haliotidae) [14], and Haliotis gigantea [15] are dark green in females and white-yellow in males. For Neptunea arthritica (Buccinidae), the testis is reddish brown and the ovary is white-yellow [18].…”

“…The gonadal structure of gastropods differs according to taxon, and histological information of the ovary is very important for interpretation of the oocyte development pattern and yolk accumulation mechanism. In Vetigastropoda, the structure of the ovaries of Batillus cornutus [17], Haliotis discus hannai [14], and Haliotis gigantea [15] shows numerous oogenic follicles similar to those of bivalves. These oocytes, as in those in bivalves, possess egg stalks, which are transport channels for vitellogenin [37,38].…”

“…T. cornutus is an edible gastropod species, and it commands a high economic value in Asia [2]. In South Korea, T. cornutus is used as an important fishery resource and is a major gastropod in the marine industry [3]. The highest amount of T. cornutus (83% of the total national fishery production) is produced in Jeju Island, South Korea, and it is a major source of income for Haenyeo (female divers whose practices are listed as a cultural heritage practice by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).…”
