The aim of this study was to determine the length selectivity of gillnet with 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 cm mesh size fishing of the Sander lucioperca in Suğla Lake. Fieldwork was carried out in eight different stations of Suğla Lake in 2014 commercial fishing season. The Select method was used to determine the selectivity parameters. A total of 801 S. lucioperca were caught in the fishing trial length range between 15.6 and 48.3 cm. According to the bi-modal which gave the lowest deviation for gillnets, model lengths were estimated as 16.28,20.35, 25.44, 30.53, 35.61, 40.70 and 45.79 cm for 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 cm mesh sizes respectively. In consideration of both MLS and length at first maturity, gillnets with fewer than 6 cm mesh size should not be used for S. lucioperca fishing in Suğla Lake.

Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208.Gillnets are among the most widely used fishing gear in the world, and there are nearly 97 thousand gillnetters in China's offshore. With the decline of resource fisheries, the fishing quota has remained a topic of concern for the world's fishing nations. At the beginning of 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China implemented the total management of marine fishery resources and began to launch the quota fishing experiment. The vessel monitoring system (VMS) provides a new data source for fisheries research. It is a new attempt to estimate fishing yield from VMS. Refined fishing intensity can be obtained through calculation of hauling time or net length. In China, the shipboard Beidou satellite navigation system terminal was installed on well-equipped fishing vessels. It sends vessel identification and location information at three minute intervals and with 10 m spatial resolution. In this paper, the speed threshold was used to consider the hauling duration of the net. The hauling nets' hours were calculated to estimate the catch rate with the hours. The speed thresholds of the 56 vessels were from 1.7 to 2.4 m/s. The hauling duration in hour of the vessels were distributed throughout eight fishing grounds in 2017. Hauling duration was divided into 0.01° × 0.01° grids based on coordinate locations. The average hauling duration of the nets was 1.7 h, and the maximum value was 41.5 h. There were approximately 514 thousand net hauling points, and the catch weight of the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) was calculated to be approximately 4.7 million kg in 2017 based on the hauling duration data.

To address the issue of minimum mesh size regulations of the stow net fishery for croaker species, we tested and compared the size selectivity and exploitation pattern for diamond- and square-mesh codends with mesh sizes 35, 45 and 55 mm for little yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis), silver croaker (Pennahia argentata), and flower croaker (Nibea albiflora) in the Yellow Sea, China. Our results showed that the legal codend (35 mm diamond-mesh) was inadequate to protect the juvenile croaker species because more than 75% of undersized individuals were retained, and the discard ratios were as high as approximately 60%. Irrespective of mesh shape, increasing the codend mesh sizes could significantly improve the size selectivity and exploitation pattern of croaker species. Between codends with the same mesh size, the square-mesh codends had higher size selectivity than diamond-mesh codends. Based on results, the 55 mm square-mesh codend was recommended for rational exploitation of croaker stocks. This study can provide feasibility and insight for the enforcement and reform of management strategies for sustainable fishing in Chinese stow net fisheries.
