Gingival crevicular fluid and interleukin‐23 concentration in systemically healthy subjects: their relationship in periodontal health and disease

Abstract: A noteworthy increase in the gingival crevicular fluid IL-23 concentration was seen that was proportional to the amount of periodontal tissue damage. As the IL-23 concentration in gingival crevicular fluid is directly proportional to the severity of the periodontal affliction, it can be speculated that IL-23 has a possible role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

“…In fact, A. actinomyce-temcomitans LPS has been shown both in vitro and in vivo to promote inflammation and osteoclastic differentiation resulting in alveolar bone resorption (27,28) and these pathological events were mediated by production of the Th1 and Th17 type of cytokines at the local site of the periodontal lesion (28)(29)(30)(31). In this context, it has been established that T-lymphocyte activity is a key determinant in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and a Th1/Th17-dominated immune response has been associated with destructive periodontal disease (32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39).…”

“…Patients for the periodontitis group had to fulfil the criteria for moderate or severe chronic periodontitis and to have at least four sites with a probing depth of ≥4 mm. Volunteers without periodontitis (periodontally healthy/gingivitis) had to have a relative attachment level of 0 and a probing depth of ≤3 mm . Patients with aggressive periodontitis and severe gingivitis (gingival index=3) were excluded.…”
