Giraffe Strain of Pestivirus: Its Taxonomic Status Based on the 5′‐Untranslated Region

Abstract: The 5'-untranslated region (5 '-UTR) of the 'Giraffe' strain of pestivirus was sequenced for comparison with those of other pestiviruses from cattle, sheep, goats, and swine. A phylogenetic tree constructed with these strains suggested that the 'Giraffe' strain was allocated to a new taxon. This observation was also confirmed by a newly proposed method based on palindromic nucleotide substitutions (PNS) at the three variable regions in the 5 '-UTR. Other reported pestivirus strains isolated from deer were assi… Show more

“…Previous results on genetic typing of pestiviruses (Becher et al, 2003;Harasawa et al, 2000;van Rijn et al, 1997) and the results presented here, describe eight pestivirus genotypes, namely BVDV-1, BVDV-2, CSFV, BDV-1, BDV-2, BDV-3, BDV-4 and Giraffe. Six pestivirus genotypes have been identified in farm animals and three (giraffe, reindeer -BDV-2; chamois -BDV-4) in wild animals.…”

“…Among them, the Giraffe-1 pestivirus was described first. It was isolated during an outbreak of disease in giraffes in Kenya (Harasawa, Giangaspero, Ibata, & Paton, 2000). The PG-2 virus detected in bovine cells originating from Kenya was recently found, after complete genome sequencing, to represent a second member of this tentative species (Becher et al, 2014).…”

“…According to the PNS method, the BVDV-1 species have been segregated into fourteen genotypes [10,15,16]. The taxonomic status of a giraffe strain was characterized, based on the 5'-UTR, as a new cluster among Pestivirus species [12]. The application of the PNS method to the BVDV-2 species showed four genotypes, BVDV-2a, BVDV-2b, BVDV-2c and BVDV-2d [14].…”
