With the rapid transformations of living environments, urban sustainable development has become an important global issue for urban growth and management. In order to effectively implement urban sustainable development, it is necessary to establish an operational action model based on its nature. This study first clarifies the core value of urban quality of life (QOL), and proposes the corresponding concept of Life-City. A variety of factors may affect the content of Life-City, and when assessing the objectives of sustainable development, there are uncertain properties and value judgments. Therefore, Life-City evaluation is a fuzzy multi-criteria decision analysis (FMCDA) problem. This study constructs the dimensions and the possible impact factors for urban QOL development. The fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) is employed to screen evaluation criteria and develop the overall evaluation framework. In order to effectively convert the subjective and perceptual issues in the framework into objective and quantitative processing, this study adopts the extent analysis method on fuzzy AHP (EAFAHP) to aggregate experts' comments as empirical evaluation. The research results can convert the abstract concept of sustainability to the evaluation of Life-City specific operation, and serve as guidance for self-examination of current status and future policy development.Keywords: quality of life (QOL); Life-City; fuzzy multi-criteria decision analysis (FMCDA); fuzzy Delphi method (FDM); fuzzy extent analytic hierarchy process (FEAHP)

Spatial and urban planning processes regarding border cooperation have reached unprecedented levels in recent decades, not only due to their potential for territorial integration, i.e., infrastructure construction and planning activities worldwide. Bearing in mind the European project, for a united and strong network of nations, this scenario is more evident in European territories. In this regard, through multivariated analyzes of city cooperation on European border areas, it is possible to identify the factors that influence the territorial success and also a sustainable regional development and even their effects over the urban agglomerations. From the identified factors, the study pointed out one that is common to all cases: connectivity-movement between cities.

On the necessity of an integrated, participative and adaptive approach to urban environmental quality in planning sustainable cities Key words: urban environmental quality; urban quality of life; sustainable urban development; trade-offs; quality dimensions. Rien van Stigt, Peter Driessen and Tejo Spit AbstractBased on a review of recent literature, this paper addresses the question of how urban planners can steer urban environmental quality, given the fact that it is multidimensional in character, is assessed largely in subjective terms and varies across time. A novel perspective of urban environmental quality is proposed, exploring three questions that are at the core of planning and designing cities: 'quality of what?', 'quality for whom?' and 'quality at what time?' The dilemmas that urban planners face in answering these questions are illustrated using secondary material. The three questions provide a framework that offers urban planners perspectives for action in finding their way out of the dilemmas identified. Rather than further detailing the exact nature of urban quality, this novel perspective calls for an approach to urban planning that is integrated, participative and adaptive.
