GIS- based Land Suitability Analysis Using AHP for Public Parks Planning in Larkana City

Abstract: Optimal locations for public facilities such as public parks are significant issues in the urban planning of Larkana city. Therefore, specifically, Larkana city of Pakistan is selected as the study area where the land suitability model was applied to determine suitable land for public parks. This study was carried out within the framework of an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a multi-criteria evaluation approach by integrating it with the Geographic Information System (GIS). Decision support system softwar… Show more

“…Therefore, multicriteria decision making (MCDM) process has been integrated with geospatial techniques in various studies for the potential land use decision-making process to solve complex problems of land management with best alternatives (Cengiz and Akbulak 2009;Malczewski 2006;Mendas and Delali 2012). This techniques extensively used for land suitability analysis to identify the potential lands for watershed management (Steiner et al 2000), plantation (Zolekar and Bhagat 2014), agriculture (Shalaby et al 2006;Bandyopadhyay et al 2009;Jafari and Zaredar 2010;Cengiz and Akbulak 2009;Chandio et al 2011;Feizizadeh and Blaschke 2012;Akinci et al 2013;Garcia et al 2014), etc.…”

“…The pair wise comparison in AHP enables allocation of comparative rating between each criterion involved in the study. This was achieved by following Saaty Scale for Pairwise comparison given in Table 1 (Saaty, 2008;Chandio, et al, 2011). Then the values or ratings were normalized through standardization matrix.…”

“…A numerical scale is used to rank subjective evaluations, which are transformed into numerical values (Bhushan and Rai 2004). The AHP is also a multi-criteria decision-making tool that employs the spatial analysis functions of GIS in LSA to produce suitability maps (Chandio et al 2011). LSA is an application-based approach that can be used in long-term planning and site selection.…”
