GIS-based multi-criteria analysis for offshore wind turbine deployment in Hong Kong

Abstract: The search for suitable marine areas is a prerequisite at an early stage of any offshore renewable energy system project. This paper introduces a methodological framework for identifying the maritime areas the most appropriate to implement an offshore wind turbine farm in the Hong Kong bay. The framework is based on the combined use of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). At the first stage of the analysis, unsuitable areas for the deployment of an offshore wind t… Show more

“…In general, the Canary Islands region offers relatively suitable conditions for floating wind development. However, consistent with other regions worldwide [20,23,24], existing users and uses of the marine environment severely restrict potential sites where development can occur with minimal mediation between conflicting user groups.…”

“…Reference [ 25 ] used a similar method while also simulating a 10 MW grid-connected solar PV in HOMER software. Reference [ 26 ] used the MCDA method to determine the most suitable area for offshore wind farm deployment in Hong Kong and calculated the installation cost of the three most suitable zones using three turbine models. Other GIS–MCDA studies have also estimated the technical potential using the technical parameters of technology considered [ 27 30 ].…”
