Givetian (Middle Devonian) historical bio- and chronostratigraphical subdivision based on conodonts

Abstract: The conodont record supports the intended threefold subdivision of the Givetian as envisaged by the International Subcommision on Devonian Stratigraphy into Lower, Middle and Upper Givetian substages. The lower boundary of the Lower Givetian Stage coincides with the lower boundary of the Givetian and it is recognized with the entry of Polygnathus hemiansatus. The lower boundary of the Middle Givetian is identified with the entry of either P. varcus or P. rhenanus. The base of the Upper Givetian is defined with… Show more

“…The first I. difficilis from Bed 11, from ca. 4.5 m higher, may even indicate a basal middle Givetian age (see icriodid zonation of Bultynck 1987 and the review by Liao and Valenzuela-Ríos 2017). However, there is increasing evidence from Morocco, that close relatives of I. difficilis have a slightly Becker et al 2020Becker et al , 2021c.…”

“…Conodonts proved to be fundamental also in the Devonian for the threefold sub‐division of the Givetian into the Lower, Middle and Upper Givetian sub‐stages. Liao & Valenzuela‐Ríos (this issue) revise this historical sub‐division which was accomplished by the conceptual evolution from a stage based on almost a unique zone to one with ten zones, mostly based on pelagic conodont taxa. An alternative biostratigraphical sub‐division for the Lower and Middle Givetian based on shallow‐water faunas is discussed and correlated with the standard one.…”
