Glaucoma in Patients With Endothelial Keratoplasty

Abstract: Endothelial keratoplasty (EK), including Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty, is now the most performed corneal transplant procedure in the United States. Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation and glaucoma are common complications and can cause irreversible vision loss and corneal graft failure. This review will cover the incidence, risk factors, and management of glaucoma and IOP elevation after EK. Higher preoperative IOP, preoperative glaucoma, and certa… Show more

“…Patients were excluded if they were under 21 years of age, had corneal abnormalities that might render IOP measurements inaccurate (severe epithelial/stromal edema, large central scars), patients with corneal dystrophies, previous corneal refractive surgery or corneal transplantation, active ocular infection, poor cooperation, or refused to participate. Prior corneal refractive surgery as well as corneal transplants affects the overall reliability of IOP measurements (11)(12)(13). Furthermore, since corneal thickness was not measured, these patients were excluded.…”

“…2 In a recent review of glaucoma in endothelial keratoplasty patients, the longest reported followup was 3 years. 3 The purpose of this study was to quantify longer-term risk of steroid-induced ocular hypertension/ glaucoma with long-term use of topical prednisolone acetate.…”
