Glaucoma laser and surgical procedure rates in Australia

Abstract: There has been a substantial increase in laser trabeculoplasty procedures in Australia, following a decline between 1994 and 2003. Primary filtering operations for glaucoma have declined in number while glaucoma drainage devices are playing an increasingly prominent role in the surgical management of glaucoma.

“…A noticeable increase was also observed for aqueous shunts, although the total number remains very low compared with trabeculectomy or deep sclerectomy. These overall trends are very similar to those reported recently in Scotland, England and Wales,15 in Australia16 and in the USA 17…”

“…New devices and procedures are constantly being developed in an effort to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in a less invasive and purportedly safe manner. In Australia, there has been a marked increase in MIGS uptake with Medicare data indicating an exponential increase in use over the last few years . Although MIGS is currently seen primarily as adjunct to cataract surgery, it is increasingly being considered as a viable initial treatment option …”

“…In Australia, there has been a marked increase in MIGS uptake with Medicare data indicating an exponential increase in use over the last few years. 1,2 Although MIGS is currently seen primarily as adjunct to cataract surgery, it is increasingly being considered as a viable initial treatment option. 3 The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the first-and second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents, "iStent" and "iStent inject" (Glaukos Corporation, California).…”

“…Yet, despite the multifactorial causes of glaucoma, lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) has consistently been demonstrated to preserve optic nerve integrity and slow visual field loss . For glaucoma patients with a high IOP that is unresponsive to medication and/or laser, surgical interventions are additional options …”

“…3,4 For glaucoma patients with a high IOP that is unresponsive to medication and/or laser, surgical interventions are additional options. [5][6][7] Cyclodestructive techniques, such as endocyclophotocoagulation (ECP), are commonly used treatment options for glaucoma, 8 especially for patients with refractory glaucoma who have failed to respond to routine pharmacological and surgical treatment. 9 These cyclodestructive techniques directly disrupt the ciliary processes that produce aqueous humour, thus decreasing IOP.…”
