Abstract: The influence of nonfermented milk containing L. acidophilus or L. bulgaricus on lactose utilization by lactose maldigesters was investigated. Nonfermented milks containing L. acidophilus or L. bulgaricus at 10(8) and 10(9) CFU/ml were prepared using 2% low-fat milk. Lactose maldigestion was monitored by measuring breath hydrogen at hourly intervals for 8 hr following consumption of 400 ml of each diet. Nonfermented milk containing L. acidophilus B at 10(8) CFU/ml were not effective in reducing breath hydrogen… Show more

“…Regarding digestive symptoms, some authors have described that L. acidophilus in milk attenuated symptoms at concentrations of 10 9 but not 10 8 CFU/mL, while L. bulgaricus reduced exhaled H 2 and digestive symptoms at both concentrations [22]. In our study, it is interesting to note that the ice cream with the low concentration of probiotic was able to reduce the intensity of the main digestive symptoms, those being abdominal pain, bloating and increased rectal gas.…”

“…Of the 17 full-text articles reviewed, four were excluded due to the lack of a control group; two due to unsuitable intervention characteristics; one due to the absence of data on gastrointestinal symptoms or lactose metabolism; and one due to the publication language. Ultimately, nine [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] articles were selected for inclusion in this systematic review.…”
