Global advanced control strategy for Modular Multilevel Converter integrated in a HVDC link

Abstract: Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is becoming a promising converter technology for high-voltage direct current transmission systems due to its high modularity, availability, and power quality. It is a multi-input-multi-output nonlinear system. The control system for MMC is required to simultaneously achieve multiple control objectives. Existing control strategies for MMC are complex and the controller parameter design is not straightforward for the nonlinear systems with highly coupled states. In view of this… Show more

“…Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is attractive and potential candidate for high and medium power applications. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The filterless operation is one of the inherent merits of MMC as compared to conventional multilevel converters. 7 However, to improve the harmonic performance, the submodule (SM) count is needed to be increased.…”

“…Comprehensively considering the voltage level and the PV capacity, IPOS‐connected BFBICs are utilized in the PV station to increase the output voltage of the station. In the grid‐connection station, the CDSM‐MMC with fault isolation capability is adopted to improve the power quality. Two control schemes of the BFBIC‐based PV converter are proposed, and the small‐signal stability of the converter under proposed control schemes is analyzed based on the linearized model . Compared with the control strategy adopted in Valderrama et al, the PV utilization can be improved when either the clamping part or the boost part is under MPPT control. Suggestions on the use of control modes under different scenarios, such as islanding and grid‐connection modes, are given.…”
