Experiments on thermal cracking in granite sample were conducted through acoustic emission monitoring, and changes in permeability were concomitantly studied using 600°C 20 MN servo-controlled triaxial rock mechanics testing machine. Two granite samples, 200 mm in diameter and 400 mm long, from Shandong, China, were selected for these experiments. Both samples were heated up to 500°C at ambient pressure. We find that thermal cracking of large-scaled granite is discontinuous and exhibits multiple stages with temperature. In addition, the permeability exhibits the following characteristics: (a) it neither increases nor decreases monotonously with the temperature rising and it exhibits multipeak due to the multistage thermal cracking; (b) the temperature of permeability peak lags behind that of the drastic acoustic emission activities. Both AE counts and permeability dramatically increased after 300°C, which indicated serious thermal cracking occurred after 300°C. Permeability ratio is approximately linear with the ratio of AE cumulative counts. The results will be helpful for understanding the mechanism of geothermal reservoir construction and long-term evaluation of safety for nuclear waste geological disposal.

Physical Simulation Test of Underground Coal Gasification Cavity Evolution in the Horizontal Segment of U-Shaped Well

A key point in the underground coal gasification process is the cavity evolution in the horizontal segment. The morphological evolution law of the gasification cavity has not been clarified, which is the bottleneck restricting the analysis of its controllability. In this paper, a physical simulation system for cavity generation was developed, and the cavity evolution in a targeted coal seam with overburden pressure was duplicated in the laboratory. A set of temperature field synchronous monitoring devices was developed to realize temperature sampling within a cavity and the surrounding rock. By analyzing the relationship between the overall temperature distribution pattern and the gasification agent injection condition, the morphological propagation law of the cavity is verified to be water drop-shaped, and influencing factors including the injection flow rate and the gasification agent component ratio are investigated. The axial length and volume of the cavity increase with an increasing injection flow rate. Higher oxygen content results in increased size in all dimensions. The research results provide theoretical support and reference for applying controlled cavity formation in the horizontal segment of U-shaped wells.

Business analysis of implementation of UCG technology in Indonesia

There is a deep-seated coal potency with a depth more than 100 meters below surface in Indonesia that has not been exploited yet. Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is an unconventional technology that can become the solution to exploit the deep-seated coal potential by extracting coal into in-situ gas that can be converted to electricity or chemicals. Based on business analysis, this paper aims to analyze the implementation of UCG technology in Indonesia, whether it is potential or not. Data are collected from literature and analyzed using Porter Five Forces and PESTLE Analysis. The Porter Five Forces analysis shows that the implementation of UCG in Indonesia is still potential as an industry because the only threat will come from substitute products. PESTLE analysis shows that almost all the factors, except for technology, are very supportive of implementing UCG commercial plants in Indonesia. Based on both studies, it can be concluded that the UCG project is very potential to be developed in Indonesia. However, it needs full support and control from the government because it will become a pioneer project with financial and environmental risk still has not quantified ideally.
