Global ENA observations of the storm mainphase ring current: Implications for skewed electric fields in the inner magnetosphere

Abstract: [1] The local time distribution of the ring current in the 27-119 keV range during several geomagnetic storm main phases have been investigated. The data was obtained by the high energy neutral atom (HENA) imager onboard IMAGE. Global proton distributions are derived from the observed energetic neutral atom (ENA) images using a linear inversion technique. During storms with low IMF B y the peak of the proton distribution is around 01 MLT. For storms with high IMF B y the peak can rotate to dawn. The rotation a… Show more

“…Accordingly, ENA intensities are drastically enhanced during 2005-2036 UT [Brandt et al, 2002;Fok et al, 2003] in the nightside but ceased by 2259 UT. This is a general consequence of the southward IMF due to enhanced convection.…”

“…This means that the substantial destination of the plasma injection of <10 keV ions could be the morning sector. The preference for the postmidnight sector is stronger for lower-energy ions during large magnetic storms [e.g., Brandt et al, 2002;Ebihara and Fok, 2004].…”

“…An MLT dependent part [Østgaard et al, 2003] is employed outside. The enhanced geocoronal hydrogen on the night side in this model was found in some cases to improve the results of ENA inversions [Brandt et al, 2002]. Zoennchen et al [2011] have developed a model of the hydrogen geocorona based on data from the TWINS LAD instrument during solar minimum.…”

“…Global images of ion injections into the ring current obtained with the use of neutral particle imaging techniques by the HENA instrument on the IMAGE spacecraft (e.g., Roelof et al 1985;Henderson et al 1997;Barabash et al 1997;Mitchell et al 2001Mitchell et al , 2003Brandt et al 2002) show the highly dynamic nature of ion injections and the population changes during a geomagnetic storm.…”
