Global Gene Analysis of Erigeron canadensis-Treated TNF-α-, IL-4- and IL-1β-Stimulated A549 Human Epithelial Cells

Abstract: Background/Aims: This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Erigeron canadensis (EC) on the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-, interleukin (IL)-4- and IL-1β-induced stimulation of A549 cells. Methods: In the present study, the anti-inflammatory effects of EC on TNF-α-, IL-4- and IL-1β-induced A549 cells were determined by analyzing eotaxin secretion using ELISA. In addition, the effects of ECon gene expression profiles in stimulated A549 cells were evaluated by microarray analysis.… Show more

“…We further validated the protein expressions, mRNA expressions, and enzyme activities of NOS1 in IPEC-J2 cells, and jejunal epithelial cells isolated from early-weaned piglets and germ-free mice. Although NOS1 is first identified in neuronal tissue, it also expresses in a variety of other cell types and tissues (46)(47)(48)(49). More and more studies have demonstrated that NOS1 is expressed in non-neuronal tissues, particularly epithelial cells (47)(48)(49).…”

“…People, however, still long for cheaper and more effective alternative approaches to treat inflammation. Medicinal herbs have been used for treating inflammation related diseases, and they are often used to develop new medications [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. It has been shown in a previous study that Fruit of Vitex trifolia subsp.…”

“…It has been shown in a previous study that Fruit of Vitex trifolia subsp. litoralis Steenis, Viticis Fructus (VF), has anti-inflammatory properties, which occur via inhibition of the inflammatory cytokines and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-signaling pathway [ 5 ]. VF is widely used in China and Korea for the treatment of pain, cold, headache, migraine, sore eyes, myalgia, and gastrointestinal infections such as bacterial dysentery and diarrhea [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”

“…Erigeron canadensis Linn., called horseweed widely distributed in China, is one of the herbaceous Chinese medicines used to treat intestinal diseases (Park et al, 2013;Wu et al, 2015). Modern pharmacological study showed that E. canadensis has strong bioactivties, including anti-inflammation (Sohn et al, 2009;Sung et al, 2014), anticoagulant and antiplatelet activity (Pawlacyk et al, 2011), inhibition of melanogenesis (Hong et al, 2008), cytotoxicity (Choi et al, 2008) and antifungal activity (Curini et al, 2003). Up to now, however, there is no report on biology and chemistry of endophytic microbes from this medicinal plant.…”
