Global Genomic Characterization of Salmonella enterica Serovar Telelkebir

Abstract: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common cause for self-limiting gastroenteritis, representing a public health concern globally. NTS is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in China; however, the invasive infection caused by NTS is largely underappreciated. Here, we reported an NTS invasive infection caused by an infrequently reported serovar Telelkebir (13,23:d:e,n,z15) strain FJ001 in China, which carries antimicrobial-resistant genes [fosA7 and aac(6′)-Iaa] and typhoid-toxin genes (cdtB, pltA,… Show more

“…More and more studies showed that surveillance genomic data could accelerate understanding of virulence and antimicrobial resistance. 29,30 Antibiotic susceptibility tests showed that the resistance rates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae to third-generation cefotaxime were significantly higher than those to ceftazidime, which is consistent with the 30-year data reported from CHINET in China. 3 Wang et al showed that CTX-M was the most important ESBL type in China and that cefotaxime resistance might be a sign of ESBL-producing bacterial strains.…”

“…To the best our knowledge, this serovar has been reported just once on the African continent, in Mali (ENA accession number SRR8987873). However, it is more commonly reported in parts of Europe, China and USA (31). The expansion of atypical Salmonella serovars in invasive infections is associated with a high health burden (19,29).…”

“…S . Telelkebir has been reported a few times in Africa (as seen in Enterobase, [48]), and are more commonly reported in parts of Europe, China and USA [49]. The expansion of atypical Salmonella serovars in invasive infections is associated with a high health burden [17,36].…”

“…Regarding Salmonella isolates, recent studies have demonstrated their resistance to many critical antimicrobial drugs, including polymyxin, β-lactams, and fluoroquinolones [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. Indeed, these antimicrobial resistant strains can eventually be transmitted to humans through the food chain, causing severe infectious diseases [13,[23][24][25][26][27].…”
