The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized our lifestyle and work patterns by connecting multiple internet-connected devices, applications, sensors, and machines, thereby generating substantial amounts of data through wired or wireless connections. This emerging technology has witnessed rapid growth in recent years and holds immense promise for promoting sustainability. Despite various initiatives implemented in Costa Rica to support sustainability and individual efforts to harness the potential of the IoT, there is still a lack of a comprehensive framework to assist businesses and the government in implementing and measuring outcomes. Globally, approximately 75% of IoT projects concentrate on five sustainable development goals (SDGs). This study aims to develop a conceptual framework that delineates a strategy for utilizing the IoT to foster sustainable development in Costa Rica. This framework adopts a holistic approach to sustainability, encompassing economic, social, and environmental considerations. Furthermore, it strives to integrate digital technologies into sustainability endeavors to optimize their impact. This study's findings suggest substantial potential for the technology to contribute to sustainable development in the country. However, several challenges must be addressed to fully capitalize on its benefits.

Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries are experiencing rapid population growth, so water and electricity consumption plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of these countries. To overcome the water scarcity and electricity problems facing the MENA region, the developed cooling/preheating small PVT-RO desalination plants have been proposed as a practical solution. To achieve sustainable water and energy development in the MENA region, this study presents a commendable and highly efficient renewable energy project for freshwater production and electricity generation to solve the energy crisis and water scarcity in the MENA countries. Therefore, this study aims to develop a cooling/preheating small PVT-RO desalination plant to facilitate freshwater supply to remote regions and produce electricity. This was done by connecting photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) collectors with reverse osmosis (RO) desalination systems, where seawater is used as a medium to cool photovoltaic cells to increase electric power generation and at the same time recover thermal energy and use it in the initial heating of feed seawater before it is fed into the RO plants, thus increasing its productivity. The results indicate that using the photovoltaic thermal panels as preheating units will lead to a 0.135 kWh/m3 reduction in the rate of specific electricity consumption for the RO desalination plant, as well as increase the electricity generation from PVT panels by a rate of 8%. The economic feasibility presented that the proposed developed cooling/preheating small PVT-RO desalination plant represents an effective technology that reduced the freshwater cost by a rate of 49.5%.

With the efforts of the United Nations, environmental sustainability is becoming the subject of countries. Policymakers and researchers closely follow the environmental dimensions of Sustainable Development Goals. This study offers a new perspective for the European Union economies by directly targeting SDG 9 and considers environmental sustainability policies in selecting variables. To be more precise, this study probes the effects of economic growth, trade openness, renewable energy, human capital, and competitive industrial performance on the load capacity factor for EU countries over the period of 1995–2018. This study uses the CUP‐FM and CUP‐BC approaches due to cross‐sectional dependence and heterogeneity. In addition, the study does not ignore possible structural breaks. As a result of the empirical analysis, while economic growth, trade openness, and competitiveness worsen environmental quality, renewable energy and human capital contribute to environmental sustainability. Based on the panel data results, EU economies still rely on fossil fuels to maintain competitiveness in the industry. The EU, which has 2030 and 2050 targets, can eliminate the disadvantages of competitiveness by expanding the environmental quality‐enhancing feature of renewable energy and human capital. Moreover, this study provides SDG‐oriented policy recommendations for EU countries.
