Global multi-site, prospective analysis of cataract surgery outcomes following ICHOM standards: the European CAT-Community

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate in a large sample of patients from 10 different European centers the results of cataract surgery, characterizing the relationship between patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and clinician-reported outcome measures (CROMs). Methods Prospective non-interventional multicenter observational descriptive study analyzing the clinical outcomes of a total of 3799 cases undergoing cataract surgery (mean age: 72.7 years). “…The use of COS has been developed to define the most relevant outcomes for all stakeholders. Although many institutions and organizations are supporting the development of relevant metrics, comprehensive and standardized identification of outcome sets has been lacking ( 26 , 27 ). The COMET (Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials) initiative has started exploring the setting of clinical trials to guide the development, implementation, evaluation and updating of core outcome sets ( 4 , 17 , 18 , 28 ).…”

“…It is disappointing that such a consensus statement for a minimum standard data set of outcome measures for cataract surgery developed as early as 2015, has not become uniform. Indeed, the referenced International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) standards has been rarely sighted (and cited) in literature since 7–9 …”

“…11 Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurements, both clinician-reported outcomes and patient-reported outcomes should be considered when evaluating cataract surgery outcomes. 15 In addition, I believe it is time to seriously start moving toward universal and standardized clinician and patient questionnaires that incorporate visual acuity and patient expectations and patient personality type. Properly worded questionnaires taken preoperatively and postoperatively would flush out and confirm expectations for the surgeon and the patient.…”
