Global Positioning System (GPS) location accuracy improvement due to Selective Availability removal

Abstract: Global Positioning System (GPS) is an important new technology for spatio-temporal behaviour studies of animals. Differential correction improves location accuracy. Previously, it mostly removed partially the influence of Selective Availability (SA). SA was deactivated in May 2000. The aim of this study was to quantify the influence of SA cancellation on location accuracy of various GPS receivers. We tested the accuracy of locations obtained from non-differential and differential GPS animal collars before and … Show more

“…Global positioning system accuracy has improved since removal of selective availability by the United States Department of Defense (Adrados et al 2002). However, inherent biases in fix-rate success and location accuracy may include environmental factors such as forest structure, topography (Gamo et al 2000) and animal behavior (bedding, foraging, etc.…”

“…Therefore, debates were raised on benefits and usefulness of extension-related applications of GIS-GPS-RS technologies and how to increase our knowledge and understanding of these new technologies. Examples and recommendations are taken from the literature and from the researches' own experience [10,11].…”

“…Even with the removal of Selective Availability in 2000, post-processing of the collar files increases the accuracy of the latitudinal and longitudinal location fixes generated by the GPS collars (Adrados et al 2002;Coyne et al 2003). Post-differential correction is a process using data collected from a nearby continuously operating reference station (CORS) covering the same time interval as the GPS collar study.…”
