Global Prevalence and Device Related Causes of Needle Stick Injuries among Health Care Workers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This article presents the research from the first phase of our study on blood-borne risk management, wherein we solicited epidemiologists’ and healthcare practitioners’ expert opinions on a blood-borne infection risk assessment in Poland. Forty-two experts were recommended by epidemiology consultants and recruited from all districts in Poland. We used the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) method in the evaluation. Experts’ opinions showed that there is room for improvement in the prevention of blood-borne infections. Commonly reported weaknesses in the risk assessment included gaps in knowledge and inappropriate procedures, which are largely caused by financial constraints and practitioners’ lack of awareness of developments in their trade. Strengths included legal regulations for medical services and procedures, surveillance, and increasing awareness on the part of medical staff. When paired with the existing statistical data, these results provide a comprehensive view of the problem of blood-borne infections in Poland. The analysis supported the development of a strategy proposal to prevent blood-borne infections and enhance existing risk assessment procedures.

Bridging the Gap between Theory, Practice, and Policy: A Decision-making Process Based on Public Health Evidence Feasible in Multistage Research on Biology Risk Factors in Poland

Stakeholder input into the decision-making process when developing public health programs and policies is crucial. This article presents an innovative approach, involving online participation with a wide group of stakeholders located in different geographic locations, for policy consensus by research methodology. The results of the project have been used to propose assumptions regarding a strategy for preventing blood-borne diseases in Poland. The research was conducted iteratively using a multi-stage qualitative methodology to explore risk assessment involving blood-borne infections. The final output of the entire project is a list of key problems/challenges and solutions associated with medical and nonmedical services that are connected to the breakage of tissue continuity. Qualitative research is rare in risk assessment as priority is usually given to statistical data and end-points (quantitative studies ). Statistical data on health risk allows to assess the health implications, while the methodology applied also allowed diagnosis of the processes leading to these effects. In addition to policy preparation for blood-borne illnesses, the methodology employed in the study can also be used to successfully explore other areas of public health policy decisions.

The Factors of Needlestick Injury on Healthcare Workers at the Hospital of Bojonegoro

Introduction: Needlestick injury is the most frequent accidents encountered by healthcare workers in the hospital. Needlestick injury can expose healthcare workers to the risk of communicable diseases infection. This study was conducted in one of the hospitals in Bojonegoro. Healthcare workers in the inpatient installation and laboratory room have a potential for needlestick injury since they often use needles in their work activities. The aim of this study was to analyze the needlestick injury-related factors on healthcare workers in one of the hospitals in Bojonegoro. Methods: This study belongs to a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. The study population comprised all laboratory staffs and nurses in the inpatient installation. Sampling was done using stratified random method, obtaining 91 people as the samples. The variables involved in this study included educational level, knowledge, training, unsafe action, and needlestick injury. Data were acquired by means of observation, questionnaire, hospital data, and other supporting data. The data obtained were analyzed using the chi square test with a significance of 0.05 (α = 0.05). Result: This study indicates that educational level (sig = 0.024) and unsafe action (sig = 0.002) are related to needlestick injury. Meanwhile, knowledge (sig = 0.722) and training (sig = 0.350) are not related to needle stick injury. Conclusion: Educational level and unsafe actions are related to needlestick injury on healthcare workers at one of the hospitals in Bojonegoro.Keywords: accident, hospital, needlestick
