Global prevalence of visual impairment associated with myopic macular degeneration and temporal trends from 2000 through 2050: systematic review, meta-analysis and modelling

Abstract: PurposeWe used systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and assimilate evidence quantifying blindness and visual impairment (VI) associated with myopic macular degeneration (MMD), then derived models to predict global patterns. The models were used to estimate the global prevalence of blindness and VI associated with MMD from 2000 to 2050.MethodsThe systematic review identified 17 papers with prevalence data for MMD VI fitting our inclusion criteria. Data from six papers with age-specific data were scal… Show more

“…Myopia is a major contributor to the global burden of eye disease due to high prevalence, especially in East Asia . In 2015, 10.0 million people were estimated to have visual impairment from Myopic Macular Degeneration, 3.3 million of whom were blind . The high prevalence of myopia in East Asian cities is due to several risk factors, including environmental factors such as education, increased near work and less time spent outdoors …”

“…With increasing prevalence of ageing and (high) refractive errors (Fricke et al. ), patient‐specific planning for cataract and refractive surgery is increasing in importance. To this end, the methods of measuring the biometric characteristics have improved over the years.…”

“…1 Of particular concern is the association of increasing levels of myopia with a higher risk of potentially blinding ocular pathologies, such as myopic macular degeneration (MMD), glaucoma, cataract, and retinal detachment. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Further details are provided in the accompanying International Myopia Institute (IMI) -Defining and Classifying Myopia Report. 10 These complications mean that myopia is becoming one of the major causes of vision impairment and blindness in the world, 1,9,11 prompting interest in therapies to prevent myopia onset and progression.…”
