Global, regional, and national trends in haemoglobin concentration and prevalence of total and severe anaemia in children and pregnant and non-pregnant women for 1995–2011: a systematic analysis of population-representative data

Abstract: SummaryBackgroundLow haemoglobin concentrations and anaemia are important risk factors for the health and development of women and children. We estimated trends in the distributions of haemoglobin concentration and in the prevalence of anaemia and severe anaemia in young children and pregnant and non-pregnant women between 1995 and 2011.MethodsWe obtained data about haemoglobin and anaemia for children aged 6–59 months and women of childbearing age (15–49 years) from 257 population-representative data sources … Show more

“…A nivel mundial, se han generado avances en la reducción de la prevalencia de anemia gestacional, pasando de 43% en 1995 a 38% en 2011, y de 37 a 31% en países de América Latina y el Caribe en el mismo periodo (3) . A pesar de esta disminución, aún representa un importante problema de salud en los países en desarrollo (4) y contribuye con el 20% de todas las muertes maternas en todo el mundo (5) .…”

“…Although a steady decrease in the prevalence of anaemia was observed worldwide since the mid-1990s, the rates of anaemia among women and children younger than 5 years old have changed only slightly (2) . Children aged 0-59 months carry the highest burden of anaemia (43 % in 2011) (1,2) . Anaemia has detrimental and possibly irreversible consequences on a young child's development as it delays brain maturation, leading to impaired motor development and diminished cognitive functioning (3)(4)(5) .…”

“…Second, the CNN model over-fits to predict the class label with maximum number of class labels. For instance, in the eye data set with model M1, CNN, classification of class 0 vs. 1,2 achieves RE = 1 due to the class samples = [6,12] for the binary classification task. Thus, all test samples are classified as class 1 or 2 by the CNN data model, or over-prediction.…”

“…While the onset of anemia can be sudden or chronic, hemoglobin concentrations in individuals have been found to fall below the 95th percentile of healthy reference populations due to several reasons such as: blood loss, excessive blood cell destruction, or reduced production of hemoglobin [11]. Prolonged and uncontrolled anemia have been observed to lead to manifestations of fatigue, low immunity, insomnia and dementia [12]. Given such situations, the primary objective for diagnosing and monitoring severity of anemia is aimed at preventive treatment and protocol guidance for specialists.…”
