GLOBOCAN 2020 Report on Global Cancer Burden: Challenges and Opportunities for Surgical Oncologists

Abstract: Cancer is emerging as a major public health challenge globally. Recently, IARC (International Association of Research on Cancer) published global cancer burden using GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates for 36 cancers in 185 countries of the world. As per the estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, cancer is the first or second leading cause of death in 112 of 183 countries. The major takeaways of the GLOBOCAN 2020 report relevant to the surgical oncology community include the rising global burden of canc… Show more

“…466 prognosis related genes were reserved for further analysis, and then the 466 survival related genes were analyzed by lasso and multivariate Cox (multicox), and finally 8 candidate genes were included in this angiogenesis-related signature. ARG_scores (risk socre) were calculated using the following method: ARG_ Score = gene expression ( 1 ) × Corresponding coefficient ( 1 ) + gene expression ( 2 ) × Corresponding coefficient ( 2 ) + gene expression [n] × Corresponding coefficient [n]. The patients were categorized into high-risk and low-risk groups based on the median score.…”

“…As GLOBOCAN 2020 reports, there were 19.3 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2020, and almost 10.0 million people died due to cancer. GLOBOCAN predicts that the number of cancer cases will increase to 28.4 million by 2040 [2,3]. Female breast cancer is the most common type of cancer (2.26 million cases), with a significant disease burden and high mortality rates [4].…”

“…Along with the patrolling of tissue integrity, iNKT cells actively participate in the immune surveillance against malignant transformation and tumor progression, including human colorectal cancer (CRC) 10 . CRC is the third most prevalent cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related death 11 . Microbiota-elicited inflammation is an important contributor to CRC pathogenesis regardless of pre-cancer inflammatory history 12 .…”
