Glomerulonephritis and Exposure to Organic Solvents.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Fifty patients with biopsy‐proven glomerulonephritis and 100 sex‐ and age‐matched controls (50 patients each with non‐glomerular renal disease or acute appendicitis) were asked by questionnaire and a telephone interview whether they had been exposed to organic solvents. The questioning and the evaluation of the exposure, if any, was made without knowing the diagnosis of the interviewee. Fifty per cent of the patients with glomerulonephritis reported more than slight exposure, but only 20% of the con… Show more

“…Case-control studies have indicated a greater risk of chronic glomerulonephritis, which can be idiopathic or part of Goodpasture Syndrome, among workers exposed to 0s (Zimmerman et al 1975). The relative risk of exposed compared with non-exposed persons was 3.9 (Ravnskov et al 1979). The difference between the groups was statistically significant.…”

“…We were able to calculate the risk according to the degree of exposure in a total of 6 studies. 4 8 9 21 23 29 All these studies did not conduct a quantitative evaluation of organic solvent exposure. However, they all evaluated the exposure intensity qualitatively by examining occupational history, working conditions, and duration of employment by two or more industrial hygiene engineers.…”
