Glomus Tumor of the Toe

Abstract: A glomus tumor is an uncommon, predominantly benign, neoplastic lesion that primarily involves a thermoregulatory microvascular apparatus, the glomus body. Although these lesions can occur anywhere in the body, the subungual tissue of the hand represents the most common presentation site. Glomus tumors are not often encountered in the foot. Symptoms traditionally include the classic triad of pain, pressure, and cold sensitivity. This case report describes a variant location for a glomus tumor in the subcuticul… Show more

“…As previously mentioned, this tumour is rare and constitutes 1%–5% of all hand tumours4 and less than 2% of soft tissue tumours 5. It seems to have an anatomical predilection to fingertips especially in the subungual zone, most probably due to the dense concentration of glomus bodies in this region.…”

“…Glomus tumor accounts for 1% to 5% of tumors in the subungual region and <2% of tumors in soft tissues. [4][5][6] According to Gombos et al, [15] glomus tumors occurring in the foot are relatively rare compared to their incidence in the subungual region, which can often result in delays in both diagnosis and treatment. While the majority of glomus tumors are benign, around 1% are identified as malignant.…”

“…[ 3 ] Glomus tumors are considered rare, accounting for approximately 1% to 5% of all tumors in the lower extremities, [ 4 ] and comprising <2% of soft tissue tumors. [ 5 , 6 ] Anatomically, glomus tumors tend to occur with a higher density of glomus bodies in the subungual zone of the fingertip. [ 7 ] Approximately 75% of glomus tumors occur in the hands, particularly in the subungual region.…”

“…The differential diagnosis of painful subcutaneous tumors includes vascular leiomyoma, schwannoma, subungual osteochondroma (exostosis), and hemangioma. Cases of glomus tumor occurring in the toes are rare, with only 9 reports to date [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] (Table I). Of the 19 cases reported, 13 were located in the hallux, 3 in the second toe, and 1 each in the third toe and the fourth toe.…”

“…The glomus tumor has been less commonly reported in the foot. Only a few cases have been reported previously [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] , with most occurring in the hallux 3,4,[7][8][9] . To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report of this tumor occurring simultaneously in 2 toes.…”
