Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometer Calibration Using Hydrogenated Zr-2.5Nb Alloy Standard Samples

Abstract: Abstract:Currently, standard samples of hydrogen-metal systems meeting the requirements of glow discharge optical emission spectrometers (GD-OES) are not available on the market. This article describes the preparation of Zr-Nb-H standard samples and the calibration of GD-OES with the usage of these samples. Samples of Zr-2.5Nb were chosen as the material for sample production. The creation procedure includes five main steps: sample preparation (polishing to an average roughness, Ra, of 0.04 m using sandpaper),… Show more

“…The structural evolution of native and irradiated Zr/Nb multilayers was investigated by X-ray diffraction on a Shimadzu XRD-7000S diffractometer (Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) in a Bragg-Brentano (Theta-2Theta) configuration with Cu Kα radiation (λ = 0.154 nm) [32]. The layer-by-layer distribution of the Zr and Nb elements was investigated using glow discharge optical emission spectrometry [33,34]. GD-OES is a method with a high depth resolution and low detection limit of chemical elements.…”

“…Among the properties of the Zr alloys, corrosion resistance has been considered as one of the most important properties that limit the performance and safety of nuclear reactors [15][16][17]. When the Zr alloys are applied to a working environment (such as in an aqueous solution at high temperature and high pressure in pressurized water reactors), the Zr matrix reacts with H 2 O to form a protective oxide film against the ingression of oxidizing species.…”

“…The layer-by-layer distribution of the Zr, Nb, and H was investigated using glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD-OES) on a GD-Profiler 2 spectrometer (Horiba Scientific, France) [34,35]. A two-method approach was used to correct the GD-OES spectra: an initial instrumental selection of the sputtering parameters and a subsequent correction of the spectrum by exponential dependence approximation [36].…”
