Glucocorticoid-induced diabetes mellitus in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus treated with high-dose glucocorticoid therapy

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of glucocorticoid-induced diabetes mellitus (GDM) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) receiving high-dose glucocorticoid therapy. Patients with SLE who had received high-dose glucocorticoid therapy (prednisolone ≥1 mg/kg/day) at Yonsei University Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, were recruited between January 1999 and June 2009. In total 127 patients with SLE were evaluated. Sixteen (12.6%) of them developed GDM after h… Show more

“…The studies investigated the effect of glucocorticoid treatment in a variety of diseases including acute lymphoblastic leukemia [3], non-Hodgkin lymphoma [3], pemphigus, mucous membrane pemphigoid [14], noninfectious ocular inflammation [15], inflammatory rheumatologic disease [12,16,21], systemic lupus erythematosus [17], respiratory disease [18], primary renal disease [19], and neurological disease [22]. One study investigated hospitalized patients [2], another assessed patients receiving palliative care [20], and one did not specify its patient population [23] (table 1).…”

“…After high-dose corticosteroid treatment, 12.6% of 127 Korean SLE patients developed diabetes mellitus [64]. Elevated fasting glucose was present in 20.2% of patients in a large multiethnic cohort of 1,494 patients with SLE [65].…”
