One hundred and fifty newly‐diagnosed diabetics were questioned to assess the duration of symptoms and the awareness of their significance in relation to the presence or absence of a family history of diabetes. Any complications were also noted. Forty‐three per cent gave a family history of diabetes, and only 11% of these had been aware of their high risk of developing the condition. Eighty‐nine per cent had symptoms and of these diabetes was suspected by 24% with a family history, and 12% without. Family history had little effect on duration of symptoms. Sixteen per cent had complications.
