Abstract:Glutamate transporters, or excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs), are key proteins that regulate the excitatory tone in the central nervous system (CNS) by clearing synaptic glutamate, maintaining extracellular glutamate concentrations low enough to prevent receptor desensitization and/or glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity.
