Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Antibody in a Patient with Myelitis: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the positive rate of serum glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) autoantibody in patients with myelitis and to describe the clinical findings in patients with positive GAD antibody. Methods: Serum samples were collected from 390 patients with myelitis, including 210 patients positive for aquaporin 4 (AQP4) antibody and 180 patients negative for AQP4. GAD65 antibody was measured by an indirect immunofluorescence assay. Results: Only 1 serum and cerebral spinal fluid … Show more

“…Interestingly, four patients developed relapses, including the patient with both thymic abnormalities. This situation suggests that patients with GAD65 antibodies, especially those with abnormal thymic glands, should be followed up regularly and receive immunotherapy [1,[8][9][10]. Our patient had abnormal cerebral and spinal MRI findings that entirely became normal within one month.…”

“…GAD-Abs are associated with multiple neurological syndromes, including SPS, cerebellar ataxia, nystagmus, palatal myoclonus and limbic encephalitis (5). These syndromes are considered to be caused by the decrease in GABA transmission.…”

“…Stored at -80°C, serum and CSF samples were assessed for GAD65 antibody presence. The analysis was performed utilizing a commercial kit (Euroimmun, Luebeck, Germany) designed to assay anti-GAD65 antibody, which employs a GAD65-transfected cell line derived from human embryonic kidney 293 cells, as delineated previously (5).…”
