Glutamic Pyruvate Transaminase Phenotypes in Polycythaemia Rubra Vera

Abstract: Glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) has been studied in the red cells of 46 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of polycythaemia rubra vera (PRV). The red cells of many of the patients showed low levels of enzyme activity. This activity could be restored by in vitro incubation with pyridoxal phosphate suggesting that the effect was due to low levels of B6 rather than to a primary abnormality of the GPT. Patients with the lowest levels of GPT activity were likely to have clonal chromosomal abnormalities in th… Show more

“…Trisomy 8 is observed in cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; Lindquist et al 1978;Kohno et al 1979;Puchkova et al 1983;Haas et al 1984) or polycythemia vera (Shabtai et al 1978;Kirkland et al 1980;Berger et al 1984). In these cases, the presence of the extra chromosome allows easy identification of the neoplastic cells, thereby facilitating assessment of their frequency.…”

“…2 Since then, its association with polycythemia vera has been confirmed. 3 " 12 It has been observed that the bone marrow can acquire 20q-in polycythemia vera before therapy, following therapy, or with progression to postpolycythemic myeloid metaplasia and acute leukemia. 4 ' 613 "' 5 Furthermore, 20q-has been described in other chronic myeloproliferative disorders, including agnogenic myeloid metaplasia 31014 ' 6 " 18 and essential thrombocythemia, 3101619 but not Ph+ chronic myeloid leukemia.…”
