Glutaraldehyde‐crosslinking for improved copper absorption selectivity and chemical stability of polyethyleneimine coatings

Abstract: Nano-thin coatings of glutaraldehyde (GA)-crosslinked polyethyleneimine (PEI) are extremely selective and effective in binding copper from seawater. Here it was demonstrated that GA-PEI performs significantly different from PEI. The copper-selectivity of self-assembled PEI coatings on silicon substrates was greatly improved by GA-crosslinking. After submersion in artificial seawater containing 200 ppb copper and equimolar amounts of 11 competing ions only copper and trace amounts of Zn were detected in the GA-… Show more

“…The ability of the material to withstand strongly acidic conditions may seem surprising, as GA is known to react with amines to form Schiff 's bases, which commonly are reversible under acidic conditions. However, the high stability with regard to temperature and pH has been explained by aldol condensation and dehydration resulting in ethylenic double bonds conjugated with the imine bonds [47,48]. Furthermore, the adsorbent showed good stability and reproducible efficiency during repeated uptake/elution cycles for 500 mg Cu/dmnew adsorbent suggesting that it could be used for reasonably large number of cycles while retaining its performance.…”

“…Nitrogen‐rich, cross‐linked polyethylene imine is known for binding metal ions such as copper and rare earth metals due to the metal chelating property . Its particular selectivity for binding copper ions and its absorption kinetics in a variety of media has extensively been studied . Here, cross‐linked PEI was loaded with copper ions by immersing the PEI‐coated conducting carbon cloth in a known concentration of copper sulfate solution.…”

“…Since cross‐linked PEI is well known to selectively absorb and stabilize Cu(II) ions in its polymer matrix, it is a perfect candidate to overcome passive leaching. Hence, the biocide can be released from a marine surface “on demand” by electrochemical stimuli and the coating can potentially be recharged using copper present in the sea.…”

“…In addition, converting hydrogenated polymers requires harsh conditions and a transition-metal catalyst in deuterated solvents; this risks undesired changes to the polymer structure and necessitates secondary purification. Similar to the above, the availability of deuterated crosslinkers [such as glutaraldehyde (Linden et al, 2016;Barbosa et al, 2014) or ethylenediamine (Meng et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2014)] are not available, which may limit neutron investigations of cross-linked structures or hydrophilic gel fabrication.…”
