“…These enzymes, however, are themselves susceptible to oxidation (Blum and Fridovich, 1985;Pigeolet et al, 1990;Santiard et al, 1995;Kwon and Lee, 1988) induced with ROS, in situations of increased oxidative stress, leading to an irreversible autocatalytic process in which the production rate of the oxidants continuously rises, leading to protein damage and cell damage.…”

“…The findings for GPx 1 and Cu,Zn SOD in most of the elderly subjects studied suggest enzyme inactivation within erythrocytes by pollutant components or PM 0.25 . There is experimental evidence to support this hypothesis (Hatzis et al 2006;Pigeolet et al 1990;Shinyashiki et al 2008) as well as evidence showing that quasi UFP ≤ 0.2 µm in diameter and nanoparticles, but not larger particles, freely enter the erythrocyte (Rothen Rutishauser et al 2006). This may be a clue to an important pathway involving primarily UFP (Elder and Oberdörster 2006) and related organic and inorganic compo nents that may enter the circulation to then target erythrocytes as well as other cells.…”

“…Further, the depletion of these antioxidant enzymes in kidney can lead to enhanced reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation. The inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities in kidney after administration of high doses of carboplatin may be because of (1) direct binding of carboplatin to essential sulfhydryl groups of these enzymes; (2) depletion of copper and zinc which are essential for superoxide dismutase activity (DeWoskin & Riviere, 1992); and/or (3) increased reactive oxygen species and organic peroxides which inactivate antioxidant enzymes (Pigeolet et al 1990). Superoxide dismutase is considered the first line of defense against the deleterious effects of oxygen radicals in the cells and it scavenges reactive oxygen species by catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide to H 2 O 2 and O 2 .…”

“…The depletion of CuZn-superoxide dismutase protein was greater than Mn-superoxide dismutase protein 4 days after carboplatin administration. This is because of susceptibility of CuZn-superoxide dismutase to be inactivated by free radicals/reactive oxygen species (Pigeolet et al 1990). The enzyme xanthine oxidase is involved in the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine in the uric acid pathway, thereby generating free radicals (Singh et al 1987).…”
