“…There was a substantial peak during the colostrum phase both in alkylglycerol concentration in colostrum and in daily alkylglycerol secretion. This corresponds well with levels previously reported (Ahrne et al 1980). Differences between colostrum and milk were significant (P < 0-001).…”

“…Colostrum and milk fat were extracted by the BDI procedure (Driessen et al 1977). Alkylglycerols in colostrum and milk fat were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) (Carlo Erba Strumentazione, Fractovap 2350, Rodano Milan, Italy) after their methanolysis as isopropylidene derivatives by conditions previously reported (Ahrne et al 1980). As internal standard heptadecyldipalmitoylglycerol, synthesized according to Baumann & Mangold (1964), was used.…”

“…However, most absorption studies have been performed with unesterified alkyl glycerols while natural ly-occurring ether lipids are almost always found as esters. There is also evidence that exogenous alkyl glycerols are incorporated into alkyl and alk-l'-enyl glycerophospholipids of the intestine [10,11] and liver [5], As milk and more so colostrum of several species contains alkyl glycerols [12,13], it was interesting to determine to what extent dietary ether lipids are incorporated into the tissues of the neonatal rat. This product was isolated on Silica gel G layers and eluted with hexane:diethyl ether, 1:1.…”
