Glycosaminoglycans in horses with osteoarthritis

Abstract: SummaryHorse articular cartilage glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were measured in synovial fluids from 48 joints affected with osteoarthritis (OA), 22 normal joints, four joints with osteochondritis, three joints with traumatic arthritis and seven joints infected with bacteria. Serum and urine from individual horses were also examined for the presence of GAGs. High levels of GAGs were found in synovial fluids (SF) from horses with OA. In each case, the level was higher in the synovial fluid than in the serum or urin… Show more

“…Cartilage matrix degeneration causes the release of GAG into synovial fluids. Thus, changes of GAG levels in cartilage or synovial fluids reflect the extent of catabolic activity in the cartilage matrix (Alwan et al, 1991;Poole et al, 1994). In this study, bFGF alone did not reduce GAG content in synovial fluid as expected while the other factors took effects.…”

“…1993), Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) (keratan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate) are part of the proteoglycan molecule in the articular cartilage matrix. Increased levels of these substances have been found in the synovial fluid of horses with naturally occurring OA (Alwan et al 1990(Alwan et al , 1991bLittle eI al. 1990).…”

“…Total glycosaminoglycan concentration was evaluated by Farndale' method, modified by Alwan [13,14] . Concentrations of diclofenac in synovial fluid and plasma samples were measured by an HPLC method with UV detection described by Krishna & Surja Kumar (1991).…”
