Goal‐oriented adaptivity using unconventional error representations for the multidimensional Helmholtz equation

Abstract: SummaryIn goal-oriented adaptivity, the error in the quantity of interest is represented using the error functions of the direct and adjoint problems. This error representation is subsequently bounded above by element-wise error indicators that are used to drive optimal refinements. In this work, we propose to replace, in the error representation, the adjoint problem by an alternative operator. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that, when judiciously selecting such alternative operator, the corres… Show more

“…Goal-oriented adaptive algorithms address the accuracy requirements of some engineering problems, where it is crucial to accurately approximate some physical features of the solution [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. These relevant features are called quantities of interest and they are usually represented by output functionals computed from the solution.…”

“…Nevertheless, this adaptive strategy is often suboptimal since many engineering problems seek only to approximate a quantity of interest (QoI), which may be only loosely related to the energy norm. As a consequence, in the late 90's, the goal-oriented adaptivity (GoA) methodology arose to tackle this problem (see, e.g., [14,30,45,61,62,66]). In GoA, we first construct an adjoint problem (see [61]).…”

“…In this work, following the ideas presented in other works, we define a pseudo‐dual problem that, as the primal problem, runs forward in time. Then, we define a forward‐in‐time goal‐oriented adaptive process.…”
