Goblet Cell Carcinoid Arising in a Mature Teratoma of the Mediastinum

Abstract: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) is a rare but distinctive neoplasm with features of both adenocarcinoma and carcinoid tumor. Most cases described in the literature have occurred in the appendix. An additional well-defined location is the ovary, and these tumors have been associated with a mature teratoma of the ovary. GCC arising within a mature teratoma of the mediastinum has not been described in the English-language literature. We report a case of this previously undescribed entity and provide a review of the l… Show more

“…2,[5][6][7][8]11 Although there are few distinctive clinical characteristics for the diagnosis of a mature teratoma with somatic-type 2. Microscopically, the cystic wall of the tumor has small foci of adenocarcinoma (arrows) adjacent to a non-atypical glandular epithelium lining along the internal surface of the tumor malignancies, the somatic-type malignancies are likely to be seen in older patients with mature teratomas of long duration, in comparison with the common age (early adulthood) for the diagnosis of mature teratoma in the mediastinum.…”

“…2,5 On the other hand, malignant areas that occur naturally are only rarely found in a mature teratoma, and so far only a few cases have been reported in the mediastinum. 2,6,7 Little is known about the incidence and clinicopathological features of somatic-type malignancies (non-germ cell malignancies) in mediastinal mature teratoma because of its rarity.…”

“…[2][3][4][5] To our knowledge, there are only 2 published articles reporting a mature cystic teratoma of the mediastinum containing a carcinoid. 2 Carcinoid tumors have a relatively slow rate of growth.…”

“…1 A primary carcinoid tumor occurring in a mature teratoma is extremely rare; only a few cases have been reported in the world literature to date. [2][3][4][5] To our knowledge, there are only 2 published articles in the literature to date reporting a mature cystic teratoma of the mediastinum containing a carcinoid. 2, 3 We herein report another case of primary carcinoid tumor arising from a mature cystic teratoma in the anterior mediastinum.…”
