Going beyond Audit and Feedback: Towards Behaviour-Based Interventions to Change Physician Laboratory Test Ordering Behaviour

Abstract: Studies indicate there are a variety of contributing factors affecting physician test ordering behaviour. Identifying these behaviours allows development of behaviour-based interventions. Methods Through a pilot study, the list of contributing factors in laboratory tests ordering, and the most ordered tests, were identi ed, and given to 50 medical students, interns, residents and paediatricians in questionnaire form. The results showed routine tests and peer or supervisor pressure as the most in uential factors… Show more

“…21 The physician's psychological characteristics include personality, attitudes or behaviour. 22 These characteristics are more difficult to estimate as they are very diverse and subjective and thus difficult to measure accurately. 19 Assessing the extent of the variance that the physicians' psychological characteristics can explain is essential because (1) this type of variation is unwarranted and (2) it may guide us to develop targeted behaviour modification tools that may successfully bring to MPV reduction.…”

“…Given our poor understanding of the effectiveness of feedback, education [10][11][12] and SMS interventions on physicians'' behavior, it is recommended that further research of higher quality be conducted to investigate the potential benefits of SMS-based feedback on physicians' behavior.…”

“…There are currently no standard intervention strategies to reduce laboratory test overuse in hospitals, although a recent meta-analysis recommends multifaceted interventions 8. Most reported intervention studies are small,9–14 with variability in stakeholder engagement and test selection and poor sustainability 8 15. Moreover, only a few studies have examined safety outcomes 16 17…”
