Going Beyond the State?

Abstract: Timothy Mitchell's article “The Limits of the State” in the March 1991 issue of thisReviewstimulated an unusual variety of interested comments. John Bendix, Bartholomew Sparrow, and Bertell Ollman offer critiques and suggestions from quite different points of view. In response, Mitchell clarifies further the distinctiveness of his own approach and its implications.

Finally, in his groundbreaking work on the constitution of “the economy,” he cuts off opportunities for articulation with cultural analyses, by invoking the now familiar rejection of macro categories like polity, economy, and culture: “To rethink economy, we will not get far by posing questions about the relationship between economy and culture – as if these were two big objects or spaces or dimensions, found everywhere, and as if our task were to identify their changing relationship, the diverging degrees of embeddedness, and so on” (Mitchell 2008: 1120).…”

“…These studies raise questions about the real, substantial nature of such social categories as class, ethnicity and nation (Brubaker 1994;Tilly 2005;Tilly and Goodin 2006). They show how certain historical processes and certain political actors are able to spread and to institutionalize their ideas about what the collective identity should be and through which ways they are able to produce and shape the meaning and status of various collective identity groups (Mitchell 1991;Bendix et al 1992). “…These internalizations, so he argues, produce a "metaphysical effect" (Mitchell 1991: 94), which generates a seemingly "novel form of external structures" (Mitchell 1991: 94): an autonomous state with solid borders. The state and its borders are thus a mere "metaphysical effect" (Mitchell 1991: 94 tics" (Bendix 1992(Bendix : 1009 and thus severely limiting their analytical usefulness. However, Bendix argues that a more important-and applicable-aspect of this border than the definition of its elusive shape is its constant contestation and the traffic across it.…”

“…However, Bendix argues that a more important-and applicable-aspect of this border than the definition of its elusive shape is its constant contestation and the traffic across it. These aspects entail the mutual transformation of both state and society and thus limit the analytical usefulness of the concepts "society" and "state" (Bendix 1992 [and] for what purpose" (Bendix 1992(Bendix : 1007.…”
