Gold concentration in blood in relation to the number of gold restorations and contact allergy to gold

Abstract: Previous studies have demonstrated an association between gold allergy and the presence of dental gold restorations. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the concentration of gold in blood (B-Au) and the number of tooth surfaces with gold alloys in subjects with and without contact allergy to gold. In 80 patients referred for patch testing because of eczematous disease, blood samples were taken and analyzed for B-Au using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The det… Show more

“…However, gold release from gold alloys used in jewellery has been demonstrated (20), and an experimental study has indicated the importance of skin exposure to gold-plated earrings as significant for the development of allergic contact dermatitis from gold (21). Furthermore, we have demonstrated that dental gold may be decisive for sensitization to gold (22) and that there is a statistically significant correlation between the amount of dental gold and the blood level of gold (23). It is known that systemic provocation with an intramuscularly given gold salt to patients with contact allergy to gold gives a clinical flare-up reaction (24).…”

“…The major sensitizers in these groups are present in most baseline patch test series. Several of the allergens found in the dental series can cause systemic reactions [19,20] and oral lichenoid reactions may be caused by sensitizers such as mercury and gold in dental materials [19,20]. Dental materials in the mouth are constantly exposed to saliva which may extract possible sensitizers.…”
