Gold supported CeO2/Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation: influence of the ceria phase

Abstract: A series of low loading gold supported ceria/alumina catalysts have been prepared by the deposition-precipitation method, varying the pH of the synthesis. The catalysts were characterised by means of XRD, TEM, S BET , XRF and UV-Vis techniques, and their catalytic activity towards CO oxidation in the absence and in presence of water in the stream, were tested. It has been found that in this low loading gold catalysts, where the metallic particles are far away one from another and the oxygen transportation is n… Show more

“…% Au, was dissolved in deionized water (6.0 x 10 -4 M) and the pH of the solution adjusted to 8 by addition of NaOH 0.1 M with an automatic system of measurement and titration (CRISON® pH-Burette 24). This pH value has been reported as adequate for a successful deposition of gold on ceria surfaces [38,39]. The solution was heated to 70 °C and then the support was added and kept under continuous stirring for 20 min.…”

“…Generally, excellent catalytic properties in the oxidation reactions [15,28,[129][130][131][132][133][134][135] and WGS reaction [136][137][138][139] can be obtained by combining gold with bare ceria or by using modified ceria oxides. Upon ceria modification, the enhancement of some structural properties has resulted in a relevant improvement of the catalytic activity.…”

“…Gold catalysts based on oxidemodified Al 2 O 3 supports include Au/MgO/Al 2 O 3 [189][190][191], Au/MnO x /Al 2 O 3 [192][193][194], Au/FeO x /Al 2 O 3 [192][193][194][195][196], Au/CoO x /Al 2 O 3 [192,194], Au/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 [192,197] [199], and Au/CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 [200][201][202][203]. In particular, Nieuwenhuys and coworkers tested the performance of Al 2 O 3 -based gold catalysts in a number of reactions, and established that MgO/Al 2 O 3 [189], BaO/Al 2 O 3 [204,205], ZnO/Al 2 O 3 [197], and ZrO x /Al 2 O 3 [197] could all stabilize gold nanoparticles against thermal sintering.…”
