Golden crownbeard (Verbesina encelioides, Asteraceae), first record for the Tunisian flora

Abstract: printed, 2240-4538 online. A new alien plant-Verbesina encelioides (Asteraceae)-was recorded in Tunisia at Hencha-Sfax. Its identification was based on specimens' examination and relevant literature. A floristic exploration was made during October-November 2013 to map the spatial distribution and to measure some biological traits of this species. Within an area of 40 km² and along 35 km of roadsides 19 infestations we recorded. The large part of them was located in ruderal environments and in lesser extent in … Show more

“…Pearsall locations were infested moderately (4-6 plants/m 2 ) while the Charlotte sites were infested heavy with golden crownbeard populations (>8 plants/m 2 ) 20 . The plant was also reported in Western Arid Chaco of Cordoba, Argentina, a few semi-arid regions in the Center-East of Tunisia, the mid-rift valley of Ethiopia and some parts of Libya 12,21,22,23 . Presently it is distributed in 5 continents of the world namely America (Argentina, Arizona, Hawaii, Mexico), Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia), Asia (India, Saudi Arabia, Yemen), Europe (Belgium, France, Spain) and Oceania (Australia, Victoria) 23 .…”

“…By combining data from many locations in publicly accessible databases such as the USA-NPN's National Phenology Database, important discoveries could be made about the ecology of this species and how its growth and phenology might differ across the wide variety of environmental conditions and climate regimes where it occurs (Wolkovich etal., 2013). This is especially important as V. encelioides continues to expand its geographic range having recently colonized, for example, a 40-km 2 area in eastern Tunisia (Sayari, Mekki, & Taleb, 2016).…”
