‘Golden Hills’ Pistachio

Abstract: ‘Golden Hills’ is a new female pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) cultivar released by the California Agricultural Experiment Station in 2005. The nuts mature uniformly and are harvested 2–4 weeks earlier than ‘Kerman’. In-shell nut yields in the first 4 years are equal to those of ‘Kerman’, but the percentage of edible split nuts is higher. ‘Golden Hills’ flowers earlier than ‘Kerman’ and has not demonstrated symptoms of insufficient chilling in Kern Co. or in Madera Co., Calif. I… Show more

“…Golden Hills’ fat content remained constant during the period of the study which suggests that the fat content had reached its peak by the beginning of the study on 21‐July with 1555 TU in Parlier and 1697 TU in Lost Hills. Since Golden Hills is an earlier maturing cultivar compared with Kerman (Parfitt, Kallsen, Maranto, & Holtz, ), results suggest that fat content could be an index to predict the harvest timing of pistachio nuts at their early growth stage.…”

“…We evaluated the growth and production characteristics of six pistachio cultivars bred, patented, technically described and released by UC. These cultivars are the females 'Golden Hills' (Parfitt et al 2007), 'Lost Hills' (Parfitt et al 2008) and 'Gumdrop' (Kallsen and Parfitt 2017) and the males 'Randy' (Parfitt et al 2010), 'Famoso' (Kallsen and Parfitt 2018) and 'Tejon' (Kallsen and Parfitt 2019). Data were collected from six trials in the southern San Joaquin Valley (table 1), although not all cultivars were present in all trials (table 2).…”

“…Data were collected from six trials in the southern San Joaquin Valley (table 1), although not all cultivars were present in all trials (table 2). Methods used for determining bloom, yield and nut quality characteristics were described in Parfitt et al (2007) and Kallsen et al (2009). The experimental trials were replicated, randomized and located within larger blocks of 'Kerman' under standard irrigated-production conditions (Brar et al 2015).…”

“…Golden Hills ripens 2 weeks earlier than Kerman so that growers can optimize the use of labor and harvest facilities, reduce navel orangeworm moth (Amyelois transitella) damage and associated aflatoxin contamination caused by the fungus Aspergillus flavus Link. Golden Hills also flowers 1-2 weeks before Kerman, and may have low chilling requirements and a higher percentage of split nuts, compared with Kerman (Parfitt et al 2007). Lost Hills cv.…”
