Goldfish, Carassius auratus, as an infection model for studying the pathogenesis of Edwardsiella piscicida

Abstract: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using goldfish as an infection model to investigate the pathogenesis of Edwardsiella piscicida. Goldfish were found to be susceptible to acute E. piscicida-induced disease and died in a dose-dependent manner. E. piscicida was further shown to replicate rapidly in the head kidneys and livers of infected goldfish from 1 d post-injection, and bacteria numbers were significantly decreased 5 d post-injection. “…The pathogenicity of E. piscicida , part of which may have been misclassified as E. tarda in the past, might be underestimated compared to E. tarda (Bujan et al, 2018; Griffin et al, 2014). E. piscicida can infect a broad range of freshwater and seawater teleost fish species, like Pomoxis nigromaculatus (Griffin et al, 2019), Micropterus salmoides (Camus et al, 2019; Fogelson et al, 2016), Paralichthys olivaceus (Sugiura et al, 2018), Lates calcarifer (Loch et al, 2017), Carassius auratus (Choe et al, 2017), Taeniura meyeni (Camus et al, 2016), Ictalurus punctatus (Reichley et al, 2016) and Anguilla japonica (Tu & Kawai, 1998).
